West Texas native Molly Ferguson is your 2017 Tejano Idol. The vocalist from Presidio, Texas was voted the top singer by four celebrity judges over 15 other competitors during the singing competition at H&H Ballroom in Austin, Texas on October 1.
Ferguson sang “Golpe Traidor,” the 1993 hit from legendary Tejano band Culturas, for her performance at the Tejano Idol finale.
Finalists from all over the state, including Austin, San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Dallas-Ft. Worth and the Rio Grande valley competed in the annual singing competition, created by the Austin Tejano Music Coalition in 2010 to highlight Tejano Music and showcase unknown talent from amateur singers of all ages in search of the next Tejano star.
The other Top 5 finalists included runner-up Jessica Arreola from Lakeworth, Texas, Mario Benavides from Houston, Texas in third place, Carlos Garcia from Laredo, Texas in fourth place and fifth place to Heather Aragon from Amarillo, Texas.
This year’s Tejano Idol was hosted by Tejano legend David Farias, with celebrity judges including Freddie Records Vice President Marc Martinez, Hacienda Records Director of Operations Michelle Chel, singer and former Tejano Idol contestant Angel Gonzalez, Austin radio owner Joe Garcia from KOKE-AM.
As Tejano Idol winner, Ferguson receives $1000, a recording session with Freddie Records, a video and photo shoot. She will also walk the red carpet at the 38th annual Tejano Music Awards in San Antonio, Texas on October 21, plus perform at the Tejano Music Awards Fan Fair in March 2018.
